Sunday May 25 Summary

John/Gregg/Matt and I left Omaha Sunday morning to chase into west central KS, initially in the La Crosse-Bison-Otis vicinity along KS Highway 4 by mid/late afternoon.  We missed the apparent brief tornado near La Crosse, although the wall cloud was rather impressive/well sculpted for a bit as we drove in from the east.  A short while later, we also saw a ~2 min gustnado near/south of the Bison area.  I saw that this was reported as a tornado on Spotter Network, but I feel that a gustnado classification is more appropriate -- it was sufficiently removed from the main updraft/meso while appearing to be associated with an arcing surge emanating from the cooler outflow. I think we'd been experiencing a north outflow wind for a minute or two before seeing the circulation in an adjacent field 1/4-1/2 mile to our south.  Otherwise, a shallow surface cold pool kept developing/being reinforced southeastward over the next few hours. Most of these radar implied strong circulations were seemingly sitting atop this rain-cooled air, exhibiting only weak/transient low contrast low level mesocylones visually, while becoming progressively outflow dominant through late afternoon.

For Monday -- while uncertain about the impacts of tonight's MCS in KS, best guess would be a west central/south central KS target, or perhaps even northwest OK.  Will know more tomorrow.

Jared,

Sorry you missed the tornados in Oklahoma. It is a real blessing that there were no major injuries. It's fun reading the blog of your adventures even though it is a little technical for us amateurs! We're praying for you and your friends. Have fun and stay safe!
